The Clemson Tigers play their football games at Frank Howard Field in Clemson Memorial Stadium, but just about everyone simply calls it "Death Valley." The Clemson University Cemetery once overlooked the field, and Lonnie McMillian, the football coach at Presbyterian College in 1948, lamented to a group of sports writers that he had "to take his team up to Clemson and play in Death Valley." It wasn’t long before Frank Howard started using the nickname, and it quickly caught on with fans. Brought to you in partnership with College Vault.
